Furlough Friday Fence Project - Status Complete

Here's a "before" photo. Bet you didn't ever notice that the fence looked that bad. I actually took this photo of the trees prior to their "pruning" by the neighbors (but that's another sad story).

Anyhow, fast forward to October 2009.
Guy spent several hours during the past week power washing our fence. I had no idea that the fence was discolored! Once he finished on Tuesday night, it looked brand new, and a beautiful yellowy warm color. But that was not enough. Guy informed me that the fence needed to be sealed. We could paint or stain it, but we both like the natural look.

He did quite a bit of research and we spoke to the woman at Orchard before deciding to go with a basic product. After all, the fence is over 12 years old, who knows when we'll need to replace it. We he used Thompsons Water Seal. It took a few hours after purchasing the 6 gallons, and a few tries with different sprayers (none of the garden sprayers we tried worked particularly well), he finished midday. It should be dry within 48 hours, and will stay looking nice for at least a few more years. See below for the finished product...

After lunch, we went to the Tractor Supply store and purchased another hummingbird feeder to replace one he really hates. This one is large, made of glass, and has adjustable PERCHES! Big deal, right? Except that a couple of hours after we put it up, a hummingbird set him (or her) down for a nice long apertif! We also bought more birdseed, and an old-school style metal chicken feeder for the doves and jays. We'll see how that works. Still no takers on our fancy Wild Birds Unlimited feeder, but we are patient. Guess what we saw on our finch sock while spraying the back fence this morning? A little 'ol finch.

Tomorrow we'll go to Orchard and purchase soil amendment, bulbs, plants and set to work with Part one of our bird sanctuary. What a day...
