While western Europe is not a particularly exotic travel destination, for those of us who haven't traveled extensively, it's still likely to surprise, delight, shock, and disappoint.
The key to remember is that you're here - so get into the swing and don't focus on what is "missing" but take the opportunity to learn a new culture, have a conversation with a stranger, try the odd looking food at the market, etc...
Driving
Streets are VERY narrow
Highway exits can be miles apart, especially on the autoroute (That's why GPS is a must)
Signs are confusing and while the pictorals are cute and sometimes helpful, in some cases, they actually mean the exact opposite of what you'd think (fortunately, there's an app for that!) :)
Everyday Functions
Grocery shopping - the cashier will not chat you up, and there are no bags, you must bring your own.
Gas - ??? WHen in doubt, ask a fellow patron for assistance.
Eating Out
you must request the bill, otherwise you'll be sitting at the table until midnight. It's not bad service, it's actually good service.
When in doubt, we just followed the crowd. IF we got lost, I did my best using my French to ask for assistance, and people were always incredibly friendly.
