Another hobby I've taken up is gardening. I'm nowhere near a proficient gardener, but it's been exciting to watch things grow, and to realize that heat doesn't always kill.
Even though we own the house, since we are planning to move in a year or so, I've been focused on maintaining what's already planted, and my new stuff is all in containers so I can take it with us when we go (hee hee).
I'm primarily learning by doing, but I do have the Sunset Western Garden book. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I plan to. That and Gardening for Dummies. I also have expert gardeners available by phone (Susie, Mom and Barbara) who are always eager to give me free tips! I taped a few garden shows on TV too, which has helped. My next venture (probably not until we move) is to grow our own veggies and expand my herb garden! I currently have basil, chives and rosemary.
