The price of oil has continued to plummet for the last six months. So why have our local gas prices, which wonderfully went down to about 1.50/gallon, now shot back up to 1.90/gallon?
It can only be one thing... GREED. I'm not buying it - I mean that figuratively, not literally.
I did hold my nose and pay 1.91 (minus 3 cent Safeway discount) on Wednesday, but I'm not happy about it.
We'll continue our regular pattern of limiting out-of-town trips (or take alternative transportation all or part of the way), making minimal trips to Modesto, (and when we do, consolidate a bunch of errands), and just not shopping as much.
Fortunately, the train to Fresno is very convenient, and if we want to visit the city, we can just drive to Pleasanton, and BART from there.
Since the gas prices have drastically been reduced, folks are excited to pay $2.00 a gallon, and I see just as many (if not more) humongous trucks and SUVs driving around town. The interest locally in hybrids, smart cars, and other energy-efficient alternative transportation solutions is back down to zero. For the majority, it's about the dollar, not the environment, society, or any of the other high and mighty goals that us moderates and "liberals" aspire to. Let me be clear though - I am ALL about saving money. If gas was still 1.50/gallon, I'm sure I'd drive more too.
I just try to think about my actions as they speak louder than words in all we do.
